Robert Walker's Diary (1856-1866)

Take Walker's own words in describing a forgotten tragedy: "Not within the memory of man has there been such a destruction of life and property on our coast as within the last few days. The continued easterly gales came to a high yesterday as night accompanied with snow and lightning... It is unknown how many have foundered at sea, the whole coast is covered with wreckage. It is believed that three hundred lives have been lost on the east coast. Today three disabled ships have been bought into Peterhead. Inland there is a severe snow storm and trains have been stopped on all the lines."
